2003 wegen SARS abgesagt !!
IBF postpones World Championships 30/04/2003 : The International Badminton Federation (IBF) has, with the greatest regret, decided to postpone the XIII World Championships due to the continued uncertainty surrounding Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The World Championships were due to have been held in Birmingham, England, from 12-18 May and looked set to welcome nearly 350 players from 48 countries. Following concerns raised by several Member Associations about their reluctance or inability to send players, some of whom were relying on advice received from their own governments, and considering that the World Championships environment would result in many close contact situations between players, officials and volunteers, a majority of the IBF Executive Board felt on balance that a postponement was the responsible decision. This had also been requested by the tournament’s title sponsors, QI Ltd. The IBF’s Annual General Meeting and Council session which were due to have been held during the Championships, have also been postponed. “It''s extremely regrettable that the World Championships has had to be called off at this late stage. The Executive Board clearly felt that this is the proper decision to take, because they were concerned that there would still be a risk to everyone involved, and because of their and others’ continued fears regarding SARS,” said Chief Executive Neil Cameron. “This is despite the costs that will undoubtedly arise for IBF and many of its members. This is primarily a health issue, and that must come first.” President Dabbaransi plans
to call an Executive Board meeting at the earliest opportunity, considering
that some Executive Board members are in SARS affected areas, to discuss
the consequences of the decision. This would also include deciding whether
the event can still be held during the Olympic Qualifying Period. This
ends on 30 April 2004 – the World Championships would have been the most
important event in terms of world ranking points to count towards qualification
for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
